[INSPIRATION] Quilting + Generative Art = Gee Bend Quilts

I’ve been counting the days when generative art would cross quilts! Artnet just announced a textile-based NFT project going live on May 17.

This project will involve the sale of 500 digital-born artworks under the name Generations by generative artist, Anna Lucia, who is based out of Cairo, Egypt. Anna’s work has been focused on textile art and generative art thrugh computer coding. These NFTs are based on 4 direct descendants of Gee Bend quilters from Alabama.

Besides the importance of blending the old with the new. Proceeds from this project go to the quilters, the artist, the Freedom Quilting Bee Cooperative from Alabama, Arsnl (Artists right Society). The project also includes 6 original Gee Bend quilts, with 80% of the money going to the quilters.

For me, generative art informed my textile work with my digital surface design collection Future Code, back in 2016 – 2018. I described my Future Code collection of born-digital surface designs as “art generated not created”
