Artist Statement

Inspired by Like Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. Through abstract representation, this quilt explores the spirit of each season from an emotional level, from bottom to top and back around.

  • Winter (cold hibernation)
  • Fall (a bit of time for grounding)
  • Spring (head in the clouds)
  • Summer (warm, connected to Mother Earth)

Process

This quilt uses 20 different pieces of fabric – commercial cottons, raw silks, upholstery and my own hand-dyed and digital fabric. Pieces are cut leaving raw edges and then carefully positioned on a whole piece of interfacing to form the mosaic top. The quilt sandwich is the mosaic top, organic acrylic felt and backing cotton fabric. The sandwich is sewn together using cotton thread and then binded with mitered corners.

Statement:

Ebony Sons Rising honors our black men, their struggles living in America and their enduring strength and resolve to rise.  This piece follows one of my studio tenets which is –

BENEVOLENCE
Webster’s dictionary defines benevolence as “the quality of being well meaning; kindness.”
I aim to create art primarily to promote awareness and enlightenment of mankind.

While my artistic voice has historically been abstract, I realize that stories need to be told, candles need to be held up and lights need to shine.  To that end, I continue to strive in letting my unique light shine to tell the stories that enlighten and uplift mankind.
